Former Minneapolis police officer was re-sentenced after conviction was droppedPolice News

Former police officer Mohamed Noor (Mohamed Noor) is preparing to attend a new sentencing hearing because he shot and killed an unarmed 9/11 caller.

A former Minneapolis police officer shot and killed an unarmed woman after calling 911 in 2017. He will be sentenced again after the Minnesota Supreme Court dismissed his murder conviction.

Muhammad NurThe former Minneapolis police officer is still convicted of second-degree manslaughter for the death of Justine Ruszczyk Damond.

He is scheduled to appear in court on Thursday to accept the revised sentence. He was sentenced to 12.5 years in prison in 2019, but last month, the Minnesota Supreme Court reversed his initial third-degree murder conviction, saying that the murder charges did not apply to his actions.

Noor testified during the trial that after hearing loud noises, he shot 40-year-old US-Australian dual citizen Damon from the passenger seat of a police car, which made him feel scared for himself and his police partner.

The former police officer’s lawyer is seeking a 41-month term for his client—the lower limit for a conviction for manslaughter. It is expected that the prosecutor will ask for a maximum of 57 months.

Noor has served 29 months in prison. Because of his good performance, he may be eligible for a supervised release before he completes the new sentence.

Damon’s family condemned the overturning of Noor’s murder conviction.

Her fiancé, Don Damond, said in the ruling: “All this hurts my heart more than ever, but now I really feel that Justin has not been treated fairly.”

But Minneapolis defense lawyer Marsh Halberg, who was not involved in the case, said that after the shooting, Noor should not be charged with murder.

The Associated Press quoted Halberg as saying: “It may feel good to make such an accusation, because it sounds like you are more enthusiastic as a prosecutor, but the law does not apply.”

At the sentencing hearing in 2019, Noor apologized for the incident. “I didn’t apologize enough, I will never be able to make up for the loss I caused to Miss Ruszczyk’s family,” he said.

The shooting led to the resignation of the Minneapolis police chief. It also sparked a debate about race and policing in the United States. Noor is a Somali-American and is believed to be the first Minnesota official convicted of murder for shooting on duty. Damon is white.

Earlier this year, former white Minneapolis police officer Derek Chauvin was convicted of killing black George Floyd. Sentenced Up to 22.5 years of imprisonment.

Freud, who died after Shavin knelt on his neck for more than 9 minutes, was killed last year, sparking a nationwide protest against police accountability and racial justice.

In March, Minneapolis agreed to pay $27 million to Freud’s family. In 2019, the city reached $20 million settlement With Damon’s family.
