Schoolchildren hit the parliament of the Democratic Republic of Congo due to strike on teachers’ wages | Education News

[ad_1]

Hundreds of students asked the government to raise teachers’ salaries to end the strike of suspension of classes.

Hundreds of schoolchildren stormed into the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC) parliament building and demanded that the government increase teachers’ salaries to end the strike that had been suspended for more than two weeks.

Teachers went on strike in early October to protest several issues, including wages and retirement age.

According to video clips shared on social media, students dressed in school uniforms rushed into the parliament in the capital Kinshasa chanting “we want to learn”.

Jean-Marc Kabund, the first vice chairman of the National Assembly, talked to the students and assured them that a solution would be found soon to end the teachers’ strike.

At the same time, Tony Mwaba, Minister of Elementary, Secondary and Technical Education, stated that dialogue with the teachers’ union has resumed.

On the eve of the new semester on October 4, teachers’ unions in many provinces announced their intention to go on strike to express their dissatisfaction with the meager wages.

Mwaba’s threat to remove the striking teachers from the payroll did not break their spirit.

This deadlock occurred after the introduction of free public primary education, a flagship project launched by President Felix Tshisekedi in September 2019.
