U.S. uses drone strikes to kill senior al-Qaeda leaders in Syria | International News Al-Qaeda News

The attack occurred two days after the attack on a US outpost in southern Syria.

A spokesperson for the US Central Command said that the US military killed Abdul Hamid Matar, a senior al-Qaeda leader, in a drone attack in Syria.

U.S. Army Major John Riggsby said in a written statement late on Friday: “The removal of this senior al-Qaeda leader will undermine the terrorist organization’s further planning and implementation of threats to American citizens, our partners and The ability to attack innocent civilians globally.”

He said there were no other known casualties in the attack, adding that it was carried out using MQ-9 aircraft.

The attack occurred two days after the attack on a US outpost in southern Syria.

“Al-Qaeda continues to pose a threat to the United States and our allies. Al-Qaida uses Syria as a safe haven for reconstruction, coordination with external branches, and planning of external operations,” Riggsby said.

Rigsbee did not specify whether the U.S. drone attack was in retaliation for the attack. He also did not specify where in Syria the attack was carried out.

In September, the Pentagon also launched an attack in northwestern Syria controlled by the rebels, killing another senior al-Qaeda leader Salim Abu Ahmed.

The earlier air strikes were carried out near Idlib province.

Most areas of Idlib and neighbouring Aleppo are still in the hands of Syrian armed opposition, which is controlled by armed groups, including the Sham Liberation Organization, which was once linked to al-Qaeda.

The ongoing war in Syria has created a complex battlefield involving foreign troops, militias, and other armed groups associated with Al Qaeda, the Islamic State of Iraq and the Levant (ISIL, also known as ISIS), and other affiliated groups .

Since the brutal suppression of anti-government protests began in 2011, the war has killed approximately 500,000 people.
