The escape from the Oyo Correctional Center in the southwest of the country was the third time this year.
According to an official, the gunman attacked a prison in southwestern Nigeria and released dozens of prisoners.
The spokesperson of the Oyo Correctional Center in Oyo State, Olan Revajuan Qiaolin, told the Associated Press on Saturday that the gunmen attacked the facility late on Friday night.
He said: “I cannot determine the number of people who fled or were captured, but I tell you that security measures in detention centers and around towns have been strengthened,” he added, adding that an investigation has been launched.
Francis Enobore of the Nigerian Prison Service also confirmed the incident and said he was on his way to the attacked facility.
Friday’s attack was Nigeria’s third attack this year. Prison breaks became more frequent, and the police captured only a small percentage of the escapees. The Lagos-based online newspaper TheCable reported in July this year that, according to compiled media reports, at least 4,307 prisoners have escaped since 2017.
