The police arrested four people who helped the main defendant.
A 54-year-old man allegedly killed a mentally unstable man with a snake bite in the Ahmad Nagar district of Maharashtra, pretending to be dead, and demanded a US$5 million (approximately equivalent) value from a US company. An official who was arrested by the police for insurance payments of 18 million dirhams said on Monday that he had previously lived in a place.
The police arrested four men, 50 years old, who helped the main defendant plan and execute the killing of mentally unstable men.
The incident allegedly occurred in Rajur village in Akole tehsil, Ahmednagar district in April this year.
“The main defendant, Prabhakar Waghchoure, has lived with his family in the United States for the past 20 years. He purchased life insurance worth US$5 million from a US company,” said Manoj Patil, Chief of the Ahmed Nagar Police Department.
He said that the defendant came to India in January 2021 and began to live with his in-laws in Dhamangaon Pat village in Ahmed Nagar district.
Waghchoure allegedly planned a conspiracy to kill a mentally unstable person and promised Sandip Talekar, Harshad Lahamage, Harish Kulal and Prashant Choudhary to give them money.
“Waghchoure then moved to Rajur village and started living in a rented house. He and other defendants got a poisonous snake and the reptile killed the deceased. After confirming that he was dead, they sent him to him. The hospital, where they posed as relatives of the deceased and registered his name as Prabhakar Waghchoure,” Patil said.
They told the authorities that the victim was from the United States and had been living in the village with his family.
“They obtained death certificates and other legal documents and sent them to the United States, where his son applied for insurance. Back here, Waghchoure and others even held the final ceremony for this person,” SP Say.
He said the US-based company is becoming increasingly suspicious because Waghchoure has tried to deceive them in the past.
“The company then sent investigators to India to verify the claim and contact us,” he said. He said that during the investigation, the entire conspiracy was exposed.
“We have arrested Waghchoure from Vadodara, Gujarat. Subsequently, four other people were also arrested under different provisions of the Indian Penal Code (IPC), including murder,” the police officer added.
