Seventeen years after the launch of Facebook, Mark Zuckerberg announced the company’s new company name “Meta.” In order to restore the company’s public image, Zuckerberg said that the name change will make way for the new brand, which emphasizes Facebook’s contribution to the technological world.
According to NPR, the Facebook application we all know and love will retain its name, but will be branded with Meta, elevating the company from a social media platform to a driving force for technological innovation.
“It’s time to adopt a new company brand to cover everything we do,” Zuckerberg said. “From now on, we will first become Metaverse, not Facebook. Building our social media applications will always be our focus,” he said. “But now, our brand is closely linked to a product, and it cannot represent everything we do today, let alone the future.”
Zuckerberg said that Metaverse is the next computing platform where people will invest time, money and attention in the next few years, and hopes that Meta will play an important role in transforming innovation into a thriving business.
For those who are unfamiliar, the term “meta festival” refers to a virtual space where people can play games, participate in concerts and conferences, and even purchase various digital goods and services. Although the Facebook application already contains many of these features, Zuckerberg said he hopes to take things to a new level.
What is the next level? Well, Zuckerberg showed off one of his many ideas in a video presentation that demonstrated the Facebook CEO riding a virtual reality electric hydrofoil, fenced with holograms and passed through a 3D image of his home.
