Abu Dhabi Music Festival presents exclusive performances by Tarek Yamani and Spectral Quartet

With the slogan “The Future Begins Now” in the 2021 Abu Dhabi Music Festival, the 18th edition presented the virtual premiere of award-winning composer and jazz pianist Tarek Yamani. Yamani’s collaboration with Spektral Quartet explored the beauty of Western classical music and jazz, combined with traditional Arabic music, leading the audience on a journey of improvisation, linking Western traditions with the Arab diaspora. There will be four performances including: Berytus, Sabaean Wonder, New Dabke and Sky Lines Ahead.

The artists will also establish contact with the audience, including students, faculty and staff, and the public at different stages of the virtual performance through a series of chats, interactive experiences and discussions about the creative process and other activities.

New York-based Yamani was the recipient of the prestigious Thelonious Monk Award in 2011, which helped start his global career. Under the commission of the Abu Dhabi Music Festival, Yamani continued to research and create new music based on most unexplored rhythms in the Arabian Peninsula. The new work titled “Peninsula” is his third record after Lisan Al Tarab in 2014 and Ashur in 2012. His latest version is an experimental exploration of Gulf music, dating back to the age of the slave trade in Africa, allowing him to start researching and composing American music at the intersection with Africans.

His passion for jazz music also prompted him to establish the Beirut jazz music platform, establishing this genre in Lebanon through the artistic collaboration of rock, hip-hop, talab, pop and blues artists.
