The Colombian fashion industry will showcase its unique designs during the Fashion Week celebrations of Expo 2020 Dubai from November 11 to 18, 2021. Fashion week will pay tribute to Colombian craftsmen and designers who use exotic Colombian fabrics to handcraft iconic works.
As part of the fashion week, Colombian artist and entrepreneur Natalia Botero T will hand-craft a unique piece of art that will be sold at the end of the event. On the first day of Fashion Week on November 11, Colombia will host a panel discussion with fashion designers Laura Aparicio and Glory Ang Atelier at 4 pm, and an opening party at 6 pm on the opening day.
Fashion week will showcase the work of Colombian designers, such as Leal Dacarrett, Silvia Tcherassi, Hernán Zajar, Pepa Pombo, Beatriz Camacho, Amelia Toro and rookie, Fashion Trust Arabia contest winner Johana Ortiz. Each work on display will be accompanied by a QR code, which contains more relevant information about the work and the designer. The Columbia company will showcase products including accessories, swimwear, jewelry, fashion jewelry and shapewear.

The fashion week featuring contemporary and ethnic design is organized by Colombia to take advantage of the opportunities brought by the Expo to attract fashion lovers in the region and further strengthen the development of the Colombian fashion industry. The week-long celebration will showcase clothing made by the 7 most famous designers and 30 companies from Colombia, who represented Colombia in the Macro Business Matching Forum held in Dubai on November 18.
Designers from Colombia have earlier represented the country’s fashion industry in major fashion events held in the UAE, such as Arab Fashion Trust, Arab Fashion Week and Galeries Lafayette, and have established a strong relationship with the UAE fashion industry. Clothing made in Colombia combines aesthetics and functionality, many of which are quick-drying, breathable and highly resistant to UV rays.
Colombia’s commitment to its fashion industry is not limited to Fashion Week. In addition to exhibiting fashion items from Colombia in the pavilion, Colombian staff will also wear sportswear designed by designer Esteban Cortázar in collaboration with Sutex and ProColombia and shoes produced by Cueros Vélez throughout the Expo.
Colombia is one of the world’s largest exporters of plain weave fabrics, with 14,000 companies in the fashion sector, most of which are small, medium and micro enterprises. In 2019, the country’s clothing and footwear sales reached US$8 billion, and more than 1,200 Colombian companies exported their clothing to more than 100 countries.
According to ProColombia’s analysis of Dane’s data, Colombia’s exports to MEASA increased by 165%, from USD 2 million in 2020 to USD 5.3 million from January 2021 to September 2021. Textile and clothing exports to the UAE increased by 16% in 2021
Colombia’s main exports to the MEASA region include leather, shapewear, footwear, women’s swimwear, and formal wear. The main consumers of the Colombian fashion industry in the MEASA region are Nigeria, Togo, the United Arab Emirates, Egypt, Kuwait, Israel, and Saudi Arabia. Arabia, Angola and Qatar.
