In another exciting development, the Abu Dhabi Sports Commission announced a series of top international swimmers confirmed to participate in the FINA World Swimming Championships (25m), bringing world-class star power to the audience in Abu Dhabi.
Held at the Etihad Stadium from December 16th to 21st, the organizers announced today that some of the swimming leaders from North America, Europe, Africa and the Asia-Pacific region will participate in various distance competitions next month.
In the star-studded arena, Abu Dhabi will welcome many international superstars, including 6-time Olympic medalist and world champion Kyle Chalmers from Australia; 2 Tokyo 2020 gold medalist Tom from the United Kingdom Dean; several world champions from Japan, Oya Seto; South Africa’s Matthew Sates, who recently won the championship of the 2021 Swimming World Cup; and the Olympic breakthrough star Lydia Jacob from the United States Compare.
So far, in an impressive year, Chalmers set a world record in the men’s 100-meter freestyle (short course) at the FINA Swimming World Cup in Russia in October, and plans to do so in December this year. Break more records.
The defending 200m freestyle Olympic champion Tom Dean and multiple world youth record holders (200m freestyle, 200m medley) Matthew Satz will become the middle distance freestyle champion. In the 2021 Youth World Cup, after he set the world record in the 200-meter freestyle and individual medley, the latter will continue to break the record in Abu Dhabi.
Returning to the UAE after participating in the 2016 FINA World Cup is Japanese draft star Seto Oyo. Specializing in butterfly, breaststroke and freestyle, Seto’s career highlights include winning gold medals in the 400m individual medley at the FINA World Swimming Championships (25m) in 2012, 2014 and 2016. In order to win another gold medal in the championship in December this year, Seto is also the first Asian swimmer to become a world champion in the individual medley event.
17-year-old star Lydia Jacoby (Lydia Jacoby) has achieved a breakthrough performance at the 2020 Tokyo Olympics and will become one of the top players of the US team after astounding the world to win gold in the 100-meter breaststroke event. She quickly became an elite swimming team in the 2018 U.S. Winter National Swimming Competition, when she qualified for the U.S. Olympic Swimming Trials at the age of 14.
Representing Canada, 21-year-old Margaret McNeill is currently the Olympic and world champion, as well as the continental record holder for the women’s 100m butterfly.
European sports talents include 24-year-old Florian Wellbrock from Germany. His outstanding performance in the 10km open water project of the Tokyo Olympics won him a gold medal. Wilbrook became the first swimmer in the same FINA World Championships in 2019 to win both the 1500m freestyle and the 10km open water event. Florian will participate in the short pool swimming at the Etihad Arena and the open water swimming competition at Yas Bay.
Italian star Gregorio Paltrinieri-the current 1500m freestyle (short track) world record holder-and long-distance event expert Simona Quadarella have also been confirmed to participate in this year’s competition. Patrineri will return to the UAE after participating in the FINA Swimming World Cup in 2013, hoping to break his own world record.
Quadarella’s goal is to increase her 10 medals, including the bronze medal in the 800m freestyle at the Tokyo Olympics, the gold medal in the 1500m freestyle at the 2019 FINA World Championships, and the silver medal in the 800m freestyle.
The star-studded international swimming superstar lineup is one of more than 1,000 athletes who will compete for 44 world championship titles in six days with a total prize money of US$2.8 million.
Commenting on his participation in the upcoming tournament, Chalmers said: “2021 is an incredible year. I set my first world record at the Kazan World Cup and won the silver medal at the Olympics. What better way than to end the year at the FINA World Swimming Championships in Abu Dhabi. It has been a long return journey since shoulder surgery at the beginning of the year, but in order to reach this point in your career, The challenges, sacrifices and bridges I had to overcome make this all the more special.”
Speaking of her goals at the December Championships, Jacobi said: “Winning a medal at the Olympics this summer is a dream come true. I will definitely fight for more in the upcoming Abu Dhabi Championships. I can’t wait. I want to end this incredible year with strong momentum with the support of some of the most powerful athletes in the world.”
