Laying the foundation for a future of food security

[ad_1]

Although its climatic conditions make agriculture and crop cultivation a challenge, the UAE has adopted the latest agricultural technology in an effort to achieve the country’s goal of becoming the safest country for food

As a city, Dubai is praised for its forward-looking initiatives. It not only focuses on achieving technological progress in all areas of life, but also strives to maintain a balance between economic growth, the well-being of residents, and protecting the planet for future generations. Due to its many landmark efforts, Dubai is regarded as the ideal city to live and work, and set a precedent for other cities and countries to follow suit. Its efforts in the agricultural sector are just another example.

Agriculture in the UAE

As climate change and food security become more and more important around the world, the UAE has taken a number of measures to solve this problem and has become the center of agricultural technology, food production and innovative food security solutions.

In agriculture, the country’s climatic conditions have brought many challenges-from lack of water to poor soil and high temperatures, which makes it difficult to grow and grow crops. However, these shortcomings have not prevented the country from achieving its food security goals. The country has been increasing investment in technology to strengthen and promote its agricultural sector.

As part of its National Food Security Strategy in 2051, it has initiated many initiatives and policies to make it the country with the most food security. Through this strategy, the country hopes to ensure that all people in the world have access to a nutritious and safe food supply throughout the year-thereby eliminating hunger. This will be achieved through innovative agricultural practices (such as hydroponics, fish and vegetable symbiosis, and organic agriculture, etc.) to increase productivity and yield while protecting resources and ecosystems. To achieve this vision, the UAE has been steadily investing in new agricultural technologies, sustainable agricultural practices, and providing support and subsidies to farmers and producers to make them more self-reliant. The strategy will also help provide new jobs and raise $6 billion for the country’s economy. The UAE’s food trade has exceeded 100 billion dirhams each year, making the country a global food logistics center.

Last year, the UAE Cabinet also approved a national sustainable agricultural system to increase farm efficiency and self-sufficiency, increase average farm income by 10% each year, increase agricultural labor force by 5% each year, and reduce water consumption for quantitative irrigation.

The International Center for Bio-Salt Agriculture (ICBA) has also been exploring and cultivating alternative crops that can thrive in the region. Other measures are also being taken, such as Desert Control, a chemical company that is working to reverse desertification and make the earth green again through its patented Liquid Natural Clay (LNC) method.

Advanced agricultural initiatives

Dubai has also been continuously investing and using the latest technology to promote the development of its agricultural sector. The city recently launched the Food Technology Valley, which is the world’s first agricultural technology city of its kind. It will use the most advanced agricultural technology and modern sustainable processes to promote the country’s export of fresh produce to regional markets. It will also help the country save resources and become self-sufficient in food production. It will become the center of future clean technology agricultural products and the knowledge center of researchers, start-ups and industry experts.

Then there are hydroponics, vertical agriculture and cellular agriculture, which are used to help Dubai increase its food production. Vertical agriculture is such a solution, in which crops are stacked vertically, minimizing the consumption of water, space and energy. Although Badia Farms is the first company to build a vertical farm facility in the city, Dubai will soon see the launch of the largest vertical farm, a US$40 million partnership between Crop One and Emirates Catering. Relationship, several tons of pesticide-free grains will be produced. The city is promoting many such projects, as well as conducting research and development work and investment to increase food production and make the desert cultivable. Sokovo, a company specializing in high-tech agriculture, has also signed an agreement with Dubai Industrial City to establish a vertical farm that will produce several tons of fresh vegetables and fruits each year.

The UAE government gives priority to farmers’ use of hydroponics technology-this technology uses less water, space and does not contain harsh chemicals. The government supports farmers by providing R&D services, high-quality seeds, etc., to help them transition to hydroponic systems and organic agriculture. All of these have helped increase the number of hydroponic greenhouses in the country (there are more than 1,000). Artificial intelligence, biotechnology, genetic engineering, smart agriculture, and aeroculture technologies are some of the other technologies being developed and explored in the UAE.

The UAE is unswervingly committed to reducing its dependence on food imports, and improving productivity through modern agricultural practices, while reducing the impact on the environment and making food sufficient. The UAE is achieving its agricultural and food goals.
