The UAE authorities denied a viral social media post that suggested that scammers might steal residents’ personal information over the phone.

A post that went viral on WhatsApp blamed the false information on Emirates Telecom and the Digital Government Regulatory Authority (TDRA).

The fake post “warned” residents not to answer or make calls from six phone numbers and three country codes. The message indicates that scammers can access information such as contact lists and bank information “within three seconds.”

TDRA refuted the rumor on Twitter on Sunday.

“This news was not released by TDRA and is incorrect,” the authorities issued. “TDRA confirms that it is impossible to hack calls or steal data by making or receiving calls.”

The authorities have repeatedly warned residents not to disclose personal information or bank details to anyone who might call. Scammers usually pretend to be bank agents to call and obtain sensitive information from vulnerable residents.
