UAE sends field hospitals, medical teams to provide emergency aid to devastated Afghanistan

[ad_1]

The UAE dispatched a 75-bed field hospital, two operating theatres, medical supplies and a medical team to earthquake-affected Afghanistan, Emirates News Agency WAM reported on Saturday.

The relief supplies were delivered by three aircraft, reportedly at the direction of UAE President Sheikh Mohamed bin Zayed.

Eisa Salem Aldhaheri, UAE Ambassador to Afghanistan, said: “The UAE recently dispatched an aid plane carrying 30 metric tonnes of food as part of an air bridge for the relief of victims of the earthquake in Afghanistan. This shipment is addressing the large number of families and vulnerable groups affected by the earthquake, Especially food shortages for women and children.”

Talks between the United States and the Taliban continued in Doha earlier this week to discuss earthquake aid, the State Department said on Friday, a few months after the two sides last met in the Qatari capital in March.

After last month’s devastating earthquake, the Taliban are seeking a way to free some of the country’s foreign exchange reserves – currently frozen by the United States – and the United States is seeking assurances that the funds will be used to help the population.

At meetings on Wednesday and Thursday, the U.S. reiterated earlier commitments to provide $55 million in new aid for earthquake relief, the State Department said in a statement on Friday.

“The two sides discussed at length U.S. actions to preserve the $3.5 billion Afghan central bank reserves for the benefit of the Afghan people,” the statement said, and the White House said last week that the U.S. was working “urgently” to clear the funds. .

Adding to the urgency of the funding debate, last week’s 5.9-magnitude earthquake in eastern Afghanistan killed more than 1,000 people and left tens of thousands more homeless.

In the same week, the UAE sent 30 tonnes of aid to Afghanistan, including basic food supplies.
