Her Excellency discusses culture, climate change and equality during campus visit
21 March 2022, Dubai, UAE: The Honourable Mary Simon, Governor-General of Canada, pays an official visit to the Canadian University of Dubai (CUD)
As part of a work trip to the Middle East. Addressing UAE staff, students and members of the Canadian community, His Excellency shared her insights on a range of topics, including Inuit culture, climate change and gender equality.
Accompanied by his husband, His Excellency Mr. Whit Fraser, the Governor was received by Professor Karim Chelli, President and Vice-Chancellor of CUD. The visit began with a tour of the University’s new, state-of-the-art campus on City Avenue in Dubai, led by members of the CUD leadership team.
Mr Buti Saeed Al Ghandi, President of CUD, welcoming His Excellencies to the University, said: “Our ambition at CUD remains to develop and strengthen our international network to help us make an ever-increasing contribution to building the regional knowledge economy, and We are very proud to do so in the name of the UAE and Canada.”
The Governor began her speech with an Inuit greeting, then shared her insights into the Inuit upbringing and the importance of acknowledging and understanding their history. Reflecting on her visit to the region, she spoke about the need for international cooperation to build a successful future for the world, concluding: “The UAE strives to seek new opportunities and innovations, and Canada is the perfect partner for that.”
This was followed by a Q&A session moderated by Associate Professor Dr Louise Lambert, where the audience took the opportunity to ask your Excellency current issues, from action to combat climate change to protecting language.
Closing the interactive session was Angela Raj, CUD student and Canadian Business Council Dubai Intern who thanked your Excellencies for their generous participation, saying, “This cultural exchange that we are experiencing today is sure to leave a lasting impact on all of us, students We are like teachers. Each of us can take home something from your mandate and important visit.”
During the event, your Excellencies visited the exhibition “Inuit Qaujimajatuqangit: Art, Architecture and Traditional Knowledge” hosted by McGill University and currently installed in the incubation area of the CUD HUB building.
As part of the visit, students of the University’s Bachelor of Journalism and Communication programme also had the unique opportunity to interact with the renowned author and storyteller His Excellency Mr Fraser. During the session, His Excellency discussed his extensive journalism career, during which he reported from four corners of Canada, before continuing to answer student questions about the future challenges of journalism.
The visit to CUD is part of an official visit to the region where they will also meet heads of state and senior leaders of the UAE and other GCC countries.
