Rome [Italy]July 5 (ANI/Xinhua): The Italian government declared a state of emergency on Monday in connection with prolonged heatwave and drought conditions that have hit the country hard, especially in its north.
The state of emergency, which will last at least until the end of the year, will give the government additional funding and powers to deal with hot and dry conditions that could reduce the country’s agricultural output by a third.
The government has also allocated a total of 36.5 million euros ($38.1 million) to the northern regions of Emilia-Romagna, Friuli Venezia Giulia, Lombardy, Piedmont and Veneto to address water shortages question.
The focus will be on mitigating drought along the Po (Italy’s longest waterway, which is 85% below normal) and along the Eastern Alps.
