Brentwood resident Mia Morris surprised the judges with her one-man performance during her audition for the 2022 “America’s Got Talent” competition.
Morris, 17, is a rising senior at Brentwood High School. She performed in the fifth week of her audition, and all four judges voted to send her to the next round.
Morris said Judge Simon Cowell could be a little intimidating, even calling her performance “genius” after making the comments.
“People may be afraid of Simon, or they may be afraid, but he’s just a human being,” she said.
Host Howie Mandel explained the meaning of the word “loop” to the audience before the show, before standing to give Morris a standing ovation.
“‘Looping’ is like having a recording studio under your feet. I record each individual sound and then loop them together,” Morris said.
Morris is a multi-instrumental songwriter. Her dream is to share her music and songwriting with the world. She has written over 100 songs, over 40 of which are currently on Spotify.
“I write a lot of songs because I know you have to write bad songs to find good ones,” she said.
Morris took the “AGT” stage with composure, grace and a sense of humor, making the judges laugh. She shows confidence in music.
“Going on stage, I wasn’t as nervous in the environment because I’ve always been immersed in the ‘AGT’ culture,” she said. “I even sat in the audience to see what the other contestants were going through on stage.”
When Morris started taking piano lessons, drums were what she really loved.
“Music has been in my veins for as long as I can remember,” she said. “I listen to music, go to concerts and write songs.”
Morris was inspired by the Beatles, but she also took inspiration from most of the music she listened to—even if it wasn’t something she liked, it still left something for her.
“I’ve been a classic rock fan since I was a kid,” she said. “I like to think of myself as the female version of the Beatles. Dave Grohl is amazing and there’s no way I could love him more after reading his book.”
Morris writes music in her basement. She jokes that she basically lives in her studio.
This is her first competition. Watching “The Good Voice” and other shows led to the formation of the one-woman show she used in her auditions.
While college is a backup program, Morris wants to be too busy performing and perfecting her craft to attend. Her next plans are to hopefully increase production and share more of her original songs with audiences.
The “AGT” live show begins on August 9th and runs until September 13th.
Those interested in watching Morris perform in Nashville should visit the listening room, where she performed Monday night with a group of other female songwriters.
