Legendary musician Carlos Santana suffered a medical emergency Tuesday night during a performance in Michigan, according to his management team.
Santana ‘replaced by heat exhaustion and dehydration’, according to one Statement from his management team Posted on his official Facebook page. He was performing at the Pine Knob Musical Theater, an open-air amphitheater in Clarkston, about 40 miles from Detroit.
According to CNN meteorologist Robert Shackelford, temperatures in Clarkston reached a high of 90 degrees on Tuesday, nearly 10 degrees above average.
“He just started writing a song about joy and love,” Alyssa Zee, who attended the concert, told CNN. “He called for healing for the world. It was in that song that he broke down.”
In a video recorded by a fan, the 74-year-old musician sits in a corner of the stage and stops playing his guitar.
While medics tended to Santana, stage staff held up a black tarp to block the view of the stage. Fans can be heard cheering for the musician in a video as he moves off the stage. The artist waved to fans as he left the stage, Zee said.
“Carlos was taken to the emergency department in McLaren Clarkston for observation and is doing well,” he wrote in a statement on his Facebook page.
After the incident, Santana also sent a short message on facebookwhere he thanked his fans for their “precious prayers.”
“Forgot to eat and drink so I was dehydrated and passed out,” he wrote.
The musician was due to perform with Earth, Wind and Fire in Pennsylvania on Wednesday night, but that concert has been postponed, the statement said.
Santana performed on CNN’s “America’s Fourth” concert on Monday.
