Sheikha Fatima holds the official position of Supreme Chairman of the Family Development Foundation and President of the Women’s General Union.

But it was her early work (which has continued for decades since) that ensured that Emirati women were not limited by traditional expectations, including arranging literacy classes for women, especially divorced and widows.

“We started from scratch and we faced many obstacles due to the prevailing social conditions at the time,” Sheikha Fatima said in December.

“We have to deal with them carefully and wisely to avoid conflict with social traditions and customs – this is the approach set by Sheikh Zayed and we still stand by.

Since then, the scope and sophistication of such work has continued to increase.

Millions of dollars have been donated to social causes in the Arab world and beyond, involving women and other social issues.

There are hospitals, schools and charities named after her in countries such as Morocco, Pakistan and Egypt.

She said her work continued Sheikh Zayed’s legacy.

“His dream is to turn the vast desert into a modern city that people from all over the world can visit and find stability, comfort, happiness, care, safety, security and tolerance. I am a partner in his pursuit of this dream. Proud and honoured,” said Sheikha Fatima.
