Kazuki Takahashi, creator of Yu-Gi-Oh! Manga manga and trading card game, apparently died while snorkeling in southwestern Japan.

The body of Mr. Takahashi, 60, was found floating about 300 meters off the coast of Okinawa on Wednesday, the Coast Guard said on Friday.

The artist’s body was found by a man who ran a marine leisure business, according to an official at Nago Station of the Naha Coast Guard.

Coast Guard and fire department officials found the body, face down in the water, wearing a snorkel mask. According to the Coast Guard official, who asked not to be named, he may have been dead for a day or two because their jobs did not allow their names to be mentioned.

The official said the body showed signs of being attacked by marine life, possibly a shark, but the cause of death was still under investigation.

Police in another area of Okinawa contacted the Coast Guard on Thursday, saying Mr. Takahashi was identified after a rented car was found abandoned on the beach.

The car has a driver’s license, which confirms the identity. Mr. Takahashi’s real name is Kazuo. Coast Guard officials said his family was contacted and identified.

His manga Yu-Gi-Oh! Since its debut in Shonen Jump magazine in 1996, it has become a huge hit, selling over 40 million copies of the manga, despite the fact that there are far more cards issued in the world.

The official card game went on sale in 1999. Television shows and video games followed, along with figurines and toys.

Condolences were expressed on social media for Mr Takahashi.

Fans around the world posted pictures of their cards and comics online to pay their respects. Some pointed to this as the reason for their interest in Japan. People recall how the cards helped them make their first friend.

“We are so grateful to the wonderful ‘Yu-Gi-Oh!’ universe he created and our thoughts are with his family and friends at this difficult time,” the London-based YuGiOhNews account said on Twitter and its official website indicated above.

Be a Yu-Gi-Oh! At the 1999 event at Tokyo Baseball Stadium, many children and parents came to buy cards, and the organizer, game maker Konami, had to call in riot police.

Yu-Gi-Oh! Play by pitting two people face-to-face and placing cards with different powers from their decks to try and beat the other. Each player starts out with 8,000 “life points,” which are chiseled away when your card fails.

The protagonist is a big-eyed boy with spiky blond hair named Isamu Muto, an expert at card games. Yu-Gi-Oh means “king of the game”.

Yu-Gi-Oh! Success! In the West, similar to other Japanese animation and game titles such as Pokémon.
