New to the UAE?Here’s how to convert your driver’s license to a UAE driver’s license

Dubai: If you are a new resident of the UAE and hold a driving licence from your home country, you may be eligible to exchange your previous licence for a new UAE licence directly without taking any driving lessons or tests.

Here’s all you need to know to find out if you are eligible to exchange your existing driver’s license for a UAE driver’s license, and details on how to complete the process.

It is important to note that you can only exchange your current driver’s license for a UAE driver’s license if you hold a driver’s license from a country approved by Dubai’s Roads and Transport Authority (RTA).

List of countries authorized by RTA

If you are a national of the following countries and hold a driving license issued by that country, you are eligible to exchange your driving license for a UAE driving license:

1. GCC countries
2. Lithuania
3. Portugal
4. Hungary
5. Bulgaria
6. Latvia
7. Serbia
8. Luxembourg
9. Iceland
10. Estonia
11. Cyprus
12. Slovakia
13. Malta
14. Albania
15. Romania
16. Germany
17. Italy
18. Switzerland
19. Poland
20. Finland
21. Spain
22. Netherlands
23. Greece

According to the RTA website, in exchange for a Singapore driving license, customers must take a knowledge test at one of the registered driving agencies.
The site also states that driver’s licenses issued by the following countries cannot be used for this service:
• Puerto Rico (USA)
• Northern Mariana (USA)
• Guam (USA)
• Liechtenstein (Switzerland)
• Monaco Island (France)
• Jersey (UK).

To apply for a driver’s license through RTA, you must submit the following documents:

• Original driver’s license from one of the approved countries
• Vision test
• Original valid Emirates ID
• Legal translation of the license (if not in English or Arabic)

steps to follow

Step 1: Apply for a license online

1. Visit this link: https://www.rta.ae/wps/portal/rta/ae/home/rta-services/service-details?serviceId=3704306 and click “Apply Now”.

2. Next select the country of origin of your driver’s license

3. Then, enter your license type

4. Enter the license issue date and expiration date

5. If you have the original license, select Yes or No

6. Next, select your nationality.

7. After that, select your driver’s license category: Light Vehicle Automatic, Light Vehicle Manual, Motorcycle or Heavy Vehicle.

8. If you are eligible, the RTA will provide you with a list of documents you will need to apply for a permit.

9. Click the Apply Now button at the bottom of the screen.

10. Enter your Emirates ID information.

11. After that, enter your personal information such as full name, mobile number, date of birth and address.

12. Upload a copy of your original driver’s license. You may also need to upload a translated copy of your driver’s license.

13. Submit the application and pay the fee electronically via debit/credit card. You will then receive a reference number, which you should carry with you for the rest of the process.

Step 2: Have a vision test

You will then need to undergo a vision test, which you can also complete at the RTA Customer Wellbeing Centre.

Step 3: Receive your license

You can then earn service tokens in the RTA Customer Happiness Center. Provide the officer with your application reference number, your vision test results, and your country’s driver’s license. Your license will then be issued.

Abu Dhabi

The Traffic and Licensing Department of the Abu Dhabi Police has approved driving licenses from 44 countries that can be used to apply directly for UAE driving licenses.

• Take a vision test through an optician approved by the Traffic Licensing Department of Abu Dhabi Police.
• Original valid foreign license
• Legal Arabic translation of foreign licenses
• Emirates ID

• Personal photos (two copies)

How to exchange your driver’s license online in Abu Dhabi

You apply to replace your foreign driver’s license with a UAE driver’s license through the official online platform of the Abu Dhabi Government – tamm.abudhabi. To use this service, you must be a resident of Abu Dhabi.

Step 1: Launch the application online

1. To apply for any service on tamm.abudhabi, you must use your Emirates Pass.

2. Next, visit this link: https://www.tamm.abudhabi/en/aspects-of-life/vehiclestransportation/drivingservices/DrivingLicence/requesttoreplaceadrivinglicenceissuedfromanothercountry and click “Go”

3. Then, enter the country that issued your license and your license number.

4. Next upload an Arabic translation of your driver’s license. Arabic translation without a license?read this.

5. After that, settle the fee through the payment channel.

Step 2: Take an eye test

After submitting the application, an eye test is performed.

Step 3: Get Your License

You will then need to visit the Traffic Licensing Department of Abu Dhabi Police and provide your reference number from tamm.abudhabi. The Abu Dhabi Police will then issue your new UAE driving license.

Northern Emirate

If you live in one of the northern emirates – Sharjah, Ajman, Umm Al Quwain, Ras Al Khaimah or Fujairah, the agency that will replace your foreign driving licence will be the Ministry of Interior (MOI).

• Emirates ID
• Vision test

3. Enter the country that issued the license and your license number. The system will then tell you if you are eligible to exchange your home country driver’s license for a UAE driver’s license.

4. Upload the required files.

5. Enter your emirate or region, address and mobile number, then click Next.

7. Go to the traffic licensing department in your emirate and present the receipt.

8. Your driver’s license will then be issued.
