Assassination of Shinzo Abe: Former Japanese Prime Minister Shinzo Abe was assassinated this morning while campaigning for a candidate in Sunday’s general election. A lone gunman shot him twice from the back with a homemade pistol. Abe served as prime minister twice, the second time from 2012 to 2020, becoming the longest-serving prime minister in Japanese history. The motive for the assassination is unclear. Gun crime is rare in Japan, with about 10 shootings and one fatality each year.

U.S. monkeypox cases: The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention reported this morning that as of Wednesday, there were 700 confirmed cases of monkeypox nationwide, including 131 in New York and just one in Connecticut. California leads the nation with 136 confirmed cases.

Chauvin was sentenced to 21 years: Former Minneapolis police officer Derek Chauvin has been sentenced to 21 years in federal prison in the George Floyd case. Floyd died nine minutes after Chauvin pressed his knee on Floyd’s neck because Floyd was having trouble breathing. The sentence was handed down by federal judge Paul Magnuson in São Paulo.

$1B Upgraded Airport: The federal government will allocate $1 billion to upgrade terminals and other facilities at 85 airports across the country. Bradley International Airport in Hartford, Connecticut, will receive $20 million. In New York, Long Island MacArthur Airport will receive more than $14 million, and Greater Rochester International Airport will receive more than $5 million.

Unemployment remains stable: The U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics reported today that total U.S. nonfarm payrolls increased by 372,000 in June and the unemployment rate remained at 3.6% for the fourth straight month. Employment growth was significant in professional and business services, leisure and hospitality, and healthcare.

Penguin dies at 40: The San Francisco Zoo and Gardens reports that a Magellanic penguin died at age 40, far exceeding the typical lifespan of 20 to 30 years. The penguin, named Captain Eo, was brought to the zoo in 1984.
