ISLAMABAD, July 9 (PTI) A senior Pakistani journalist was attacked by unidentified persons outside his office on Saturday, with cases of harassment of media personalities critical of state institutions on the rise.
Bol TV anchor Sami Ibrahim was standing outside his office in the Melody district of the capital Islamabad when about three people attacked him.
Ibrahim confirmed the incident in a video clip, saying he was attacked from behind. He said the attackers filmed the incident and fled in a car with a “green license plate”.
Green is reserved for state-owned vehicles driven by officials.
Police arrived at the scene and launched an investigation to understand the motive behind the incident.
Recently, Pakistan’s FBI launched an investigation into Ibrahim’s dissemination of “anti-state videos and speeches” on social media platforms.
Earlier this month, unidentified assailants attacked senior journalist Ayaz Amir as he was on his way home from Lahore.
In June, Ahmed Shaheen, editor-in-chief of news site iNEWS, was attacked by unidentified men.
Ibrahim is known for his support of former Prime Minister Imran Khan.
The attack on Ibrahim came as another pro-Imran Khan journalist was released on bail by the Lahore High Court (LHC). Imran Riaz Khan was arrested by police in Atok district of Punjab province on Tuesday night. But before he was released by the local court, he was arrested by Chakwal district police.
