Prince William is “deeply saddened” by the death of former Japanese Prime Minister Shinzo Abe.
Abe was shot dead on Friday (08.07.22) while delivering a campaign speech ahead of the upcoming election, with the Duke of Cambridge posting heartfelt tributes on social media and recalling the kindness he received during his visit to Japan.
William, 40, wrote on the Kensington Royal Twitter account: “Deeply saddened to learn of the passing of former Prime Minister Shinzo Abe of Japan. He was a true statesman and steadfast leader.
“I will never forget the warmth and generosity he gave me during my visit to Japan in 2015. My thoughts are with his family and the Japanese people. W”
William’s grandmother, Queen Elizabeth, paid tribute to Abe with her own statement.
The 96-year-old monarch wrote: “My family and I are deeply saddened to hear of the sudden and tragic passing of former Prime Minister Shinzo Abe.
“I have fond memories of meeting Mr Abe and his wife during a visit to the UK in 2016.
“His love for Japan and his desire to forge closer ties with the UK is palpable.”
British Prime Minister Boris Johnson also paid tribute to Abe, the longest-serving prime minister in Japan’s history, and said his “global leadership” would be remembered.
He tweeted: “Unbelievably sad news about Shinzo Abe. His global leadership in unknown times will be remembered by many. My thoughts are with his family, friends and the people of Japan.
“Britain stands with you in this dark time.”
