After the tourists sent four for their debut, the Sri Lankan bowler kept the score of the Indian team at 132-5
Disciplined bowling and Dhananjaya de Silva’s 40 unbeaten matches helped Sri Lanka beat India in a four-game winning streak in the second 2020 international game postponed by Covid-19 on Wednesday.
Chasing 133 victories, Sri Lanka relied on an undefeated 28-time seventh-gate partnership between De Silva and Chamika Karunaratne, who scored 12 points to achieve their goal with two goals in Colombo.
After Sri Lanka got into trouble with a score of 105-6, De Silva kept his composure on 34 ball hits and helped the hosts with Karunarat, who hit 6 points in time in the penultimate game. 1-1 equalized three games in the series.
“I always thought and knew it was a big score. I decided to hit the ball until the end. We stayed nervous today,” said match de Silva. “It is always difficult for India.”
The Sri Lankan bowler, led by Akila Dananjaya, dropped India’s score to 133-5. The tourists had previously tested positive for the virus between Krunal Pandya and his Eight close contacts were forced to be absent and sent four players to make their debut, which was delayed several hours before the scheduled start on Tuesday.
Dananjaya cleverly mixed finger rotation and wrist rotation to return to the 2-29 numbers, including the key wicket of Captain Shikhar Dhawan, and cast 40 points.
Left-hander Dhawan played 49 points with rookie Ruturaj Gaikwad (21 years old) and in keeping with Devdutt Padikkal (29 years old), he also played his first T20 on a seemingly slow court.
But Vanindu Hasalanga defeated the left-hander Padical in the 16th inning with a spin, because India found it difficult to improve the running rate.
Goalkeeper and hitter Sanju Samson and rookie Nitish Rana also failed to improve India’s overall results because they lost to Dananjaya and speed bowler Dushmantha Chameera respectively.
“I think if we can control them to a low number, we can chase them,” said Captain Dasun Shanaka.
Avishka Fernando eliminated pitcher Bhuvneshwar Kumar with 11 points in the Sri Lanka chase, but Minod Bhanuka scored 36 points.
Spinners Kuldeep Yadav and Varun Chakravarthy injured the midfielder with a key three-point blow including Shanaka before De Silva hit back and completed the victory.
“I am very proud of the boys because we played a very good game,” Davan said of his young team.
“This kind of attitude that never goes away will push the game to the end while defending only 132 people, and pay tribute to the bowlers and batsmen.”
The third and decisive T20 will be held at the same venue on Thursday.
All games are held at the R. Premadasa Stadium and there are no spectators as Sri Lanka is fighting a surge in pandemic cases.
