Gulf News met Tuscan Williams, founder of Facebook community Women Who Golf, at MyGolf Dubai, who was visiting Dubai.
Gulf News: Tuscany, tell our readers about yourself, women’s golf and your new sport, women’s golf?
Tuscany: Golf for me is a social pursuit, it’s about fun, friends and memories. When I was a junior golfer in Australia, the only option was to play with much older women. I love the game my dad introduced me to, but no girl my age can play it. I’m dying to see a community that boys love. instead. I felt like a “second-class” citizen, with hindsight that nothing would satisfy my desires as a woman. Unfortunately, this lack of social opportunities greatly reduced the amount of golf I played and basically drove me out of the game.
When I started golfing women, I quickly discovered that there were thousands of other women just like me. We all crave community. This is the main reason why Facebook groups are so successful.
Gulf News: Tell us more about women’s golf?
Tuscany: Women in Golf is a community for women to find friends and share experiences in a positive and supportive forum. Our members are very active and build relationships with like-minded people across the globe.
Our Facebook group has over 51,000 members since its inception, with about 1,000 new members joining every week.
Even more satisfying, I received a flood of messages telling me that the group “was the first thing they checked when they woke up and the last thing they checked when they went to bed”.
Gulf News: Tell us why you are in Dubai?
Tuscany: I am visiting Dubai because, in my opinion, it is one of the most exciting and innovative cities in the world. We are seeking partnerships with innovators who are actively seeking to bring more women into golf.
Gulf News: What do you hope to achieve with Women Who Golf?
Tuscany: So far, I’m sharing its success story with like-minded people in the industry to see how we can work together to develop this program for the benefit of all: female golfers and to see if we can help the golf industry adapt we are looking for.
We’re launching “WWG Friend Finder,” an online directory for finding gaming buddies in any city in the world.
Additionally, we are creating a global directory of women’s golf accredited courses. To be featured, courses must demonstrate that they support women’s golf and create a great experience for our members. This project creates its own momentum; the more clubs that create women-specific experiences, the more women they attract, so the cycle grows like a positive snowball.
Gulf News: When is the next time you’re in Dubai and what’s your next step for women in golf?
Tuscany: We’ll be back in October and are excited to bring the inaugural Women’s Golf Gathering and Championship Week to the region from around the world. We are in discussions with several club executives and tour operators who share our passion for developing women’s golf. We are eager to capture a lot of positive momentum.
Gulf News: Thank you for taking time out of Tuscany. We will follow your progress. Good luck.
