Remarenko is the bronze medalist at the 2014 World Judo Championships and suffered a shoulder injury last year
UAE judo player Ivan Remarenko failed to perform at his best at the Tokyo Olympics on Thursday. The 32-year-old Remarenko lost to Canada’s Shady El Nahas in the 32nd round.
Remarenco’s defeat in the 100kg class made sprint star Hassan Al Noubi the only Emirati athlete in Tokyo.
Al Noubi will participate in the 100m preliminaries on Saturday.
Remarenco, a performer who performed well on the international stage, did not respond to El Nahas’s outstanding performance on Thursday and lost 32 rounds 10-0.
Earlier, shooter Saif Benfutais (flying saucer shooting), judo player Victor Skvortov (73 kg) and swimmer Yusuf Al Matrosi (100 M freestyle) respectively withdrew from the competition at the Tokyo Olympics.
Remarenko, the bronze medalist at the 2014 World Judo Championship, suffered a shoulder injury last year.
Nasser Al Tamimi, secretary general of the UAE Judo and Wrestling Federation, stated that they will now look to the future and train athletes for the next two Summer Olympics in Paris (2024) and Los Angeles (2028).
“We apologize to the leaders and people of the UAE for failing to win Olympic medals in Tokyo,” Altamimi said.
“The Judo and Wrestling Federation has always regarded failure as the biggest motivation for hard work, solving negative problems and working hard to solve these problems.”
Al Tamimi said that Victor Scvortov had an impressive performance despite losing in the 32nd round against Sweden’s Tommy Macias (10s1-1s2).
“As for Ivan (Remarenko), he suffered a shoulder injury last year and had to stop training for a while to recover from the injury,” Altamimi said.
Altamimi promised that the Federation will spare no effort to train world-class athletes for the next two Olympic Games.
“The Olympic Games have special and different characteristics, especially in judo. Champions and losers are difficult to predict,” he said, referring to the shocking defeats of several judo champions in Tokyo.
Altamimi said that preparations for the next Olympic Games will begin in September this year.
