Oregon Culture Night Offers Heritage and Summer Entertainment

A series of summer evening events at the Museum of Natural and Cultural History showcase the rich diversity of Oregon’s artists and cultural practices.

This Oregon Culture Night Held outdoors at 6 p.m. on Thursdays in the museum courtyard, free for those with a current UO ID. Participants are welcome to bring a picnic and enjoy heritage performances and demonstrations.

Oregon Culture Night originally started as a safer program during the COVID 19 pandemic in 2021, showcasing the work of master artists from across the U.S. Traditional Arts and Apprenticeship Programsan initiative of the Oregon Folklore Network of Museums.

“The traditional arts apprenticeship program helps maintain cultural practices and ensures that those traditions are passed down from generation to generation,” said Emily West Hartlerode, associate director of the Oregon Folklore Network. “Each of these cultural guardians has demonstrated artistic excellence and a deep understanding of the historical context of these traditions. They know what has remained constant and what innovations have changed their traditions over the centuries.”

August 11: Hip-Hop Poetry by Mic Crenshaw

Mic Crenshaw is a world-class host and former member of the Portland group Hungry Mob; 2001 Portland Poetry Slam Champion and National Finalist; and one of the most respected hip-hop artists in the Northwest. His albums topped the college radio hip-hop charts, and he has performed with bands such as the Fugees, Outkast, and Wu-Tang Clan.

August. 18: Rajasthani and Hindustani music with Nisha Joshi

Nisha Joshi is a master artist in the Rajasthani folk and Hindustani classical music traditions. In India, she regularly performs both styles on Delhi radio and TV. She received her first apprenticeship award in Oregon in 1997, but she also runs the Swaranjali Indian Conservatory in Portland and teaches vocal, organ, sitar and tabla at home.

August 25: Persian Calligraphy by Marjan Anvari

Marjan Anvari is the master artist and art protector of tazhib, a traditional Persian form of golden lighting dating back to the third century. Mathematically accurate and beautifully ornate, tazhib, Along with calligraphy and miniature painting, it is the basis of Iranian architecture, handicrafts, carpets, silverware and manuscripts. Since founding Negahreh Art+ Design in 2014, Anvari is the recipient of the 2016 Apprenticeship Award and the 2022 recipient of the Traditional Art Restoration Program.
