Digital technologies ‘reduce’ the impact of the built environment on the planet

[ad_1]

CRTKL, a global cultural institution specializing in architecture, planning and design, has committed to using architectural simulation for 50% of its projects by the end of this year.

Effective use of technology in the built environment ensures more sustainable outcomes, according to CRTKL, which highlights in its industry-leading annual sustainability report that digital technologies are reducing 40% of the greenhouse gas emissions currently responsible for the built environment. Three key ways.

Innovation measurement

According to the CRTKL report, the performance of these projects is being innovatively measured and tracked through digital dashboards. This is part of CRTKL’s broader mission to ensure that all its projects in operation by 2030 and materials-wise by 2040 are climate-friendly. This is in line with the efforts being undertaken across the region, with a recent survey highlighting that according to 82% of UAE-based IT decision makers, sustainability is now one of the most important drivers for their organisations, and a commitment to science-based Target.

Kashif Dafedar, Assistant at CRTKL, commented: “Digital innovation that combines design and sustainability is key to creating a carbon positive built environment. This technology is delivering climate-focused low-carbon solutions that reduce emissions and advance net-zero power. And establish design standards that are good for the planet.”

Three key ways that digital technologies can reduce the impact of the built environment on the planet include:

climate monitoring

The award-winning CLIMATESCOUT is a new, first-of-its-kind open source platform that helps users design buildings that uniquely respond to their site by providing climate-specific design advice at a building scale. CLIMATESCOUT connects building responses and expressions to climate in real time and facilitates interaction through a diagram between sustainable design strategies and climatic conditions. Demand for the tool cannot be underestimated, garnering 14,000 views in its first year of release.

CLIMATESCOUT voted on Fast Company’s 2022 Ideas to Change the World, pairing the Köppen-Geiger climate classification and building design strategies in the Architecture 2030 palette. The web-based application uses a combination of imagery and data to visualize low-carbon, regenerative, resilient and adaptive buildings.

Performance Driven Design (PDD)

PDD is a data-driven design process that combines analog and digital tools to design low-carbon buildings that are also more resilient and climate-responsive. This is a flexible process that can be tailored to any project goal. Backed by scientific principles, research, and performance simulation, PDD guides designers in an increasingly complex world, enhancing the quality and value of any project.

Data Analysis and Computational Design

Harnessing the power of data, computational design aims to deliver as much value as possible by customizing design solutions to the needs of specific clients and communities. By leveraging ample evidence on the social, economic and environmental impacts of design, Building Simulation analyzes the greatest available intelligence to create compelling designs that deliver measurable benefits for people, place and planet. Analyzing data in design improves sustainability by reducing impact on natural built environments.

Dafedar added: “As computational designers and leaders in product development, we are constantly striving to improve our collective understanding and come up with more climate-sensitive responsible design solutions. By using a combination of in-house created and off-the-shelf tools, We can more easily incorporate sustainable strategies into our designs.”- arab trade news agency
