August 10 (UPI) – Earlier this month, a 1,800-pound beluga whale was stuck in France’s Seine River for more than a week and died when being transported back to sea, officials said Tuesday.

The 13-foot-long whale weighed less than 800 pounds, euthanized On the way to a saltwater swimming pool in Normandy. On August 2, it was trapped in a freshwater lock at Saint-Pierre La Garena, about 45 miles northwest of Paris.

Conservation group Sea Shepherd France said the whales were refusing to eat and their health was rapidly deteriorating.

Divers, veterinarians and rescuers trying to save The mammals set up a net around the whale in a complex operation that took six hours to lift from the water with the help of a tractor and crane.

During the rescue, the whale had difficulty breathing and authorities decided to euthanize it.
