GMG, a global wellbeing company covering the sports, food and health sectors, has partnered with the Department of Economy and Tourism (DET) to install a water station in Al Qudra as part of the “Dubai Can” programme.
The partnership is part of GMG’s commitment to support sustainable development across the country and meet the well-being of the UAE community. In addition to the water station in Al Qudra, the company has installed drinking water filters in its UAE office.
GMG’s support of the “Dubai Can” initiative follows its recently launched “Make a Difference” sustainability strategy framework. This is in line with key global and local sustainability trends and underlines GMG’s commitment to creating positive and transformative contributions across the region and beyond through its three strategic pillars: “Planet Forward, Inspire People” and “Itself” change”.
Dubai Jar is a sustainability initiative launched by His Highness Sheikh Hamdan bin Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum, Crown Prince of Dubai and Chairman of Dubai Executive Council, to Fill water bottles to reduce single-use water bottles. As part of the project, free water refill stations will be installed in major public spaces across the city.
Drinking water from the station will be maintained at a cool 10 degrees Celsius, providing a fresh, clean and safe alternative for people, while also promoting a sustainable and environmentally friendly ‘culture of hydration’.
Mohammad A Baker, Vice Chairman and CEO of GMG, said: “As a wellbeing company and responsible citizen, we are committed to supporting causes that make our communities healthier. We are therefore proud to partner with Dubai Can on this initiative Our environment will be protected by minimising the impact of plastic waste. We look forward to continuing to work with the government and other key stakeholders to promote positive change and raise awareness of environmental issues.”
Ahmed Al Khaja, CEO of Dubai Festivals and Retail Agency (DFRE), said: “We are delighted to see the support from global brand GMG to further enhance the visibility of Dubai’s Canning programme across the city, inspired by our visionary leadership. We strive to position Dubai as a leading sustainable destination and ultimately the best city in the world to travel, live and work.
“GMG’s installation of this new water dispenser in Al Qudra will provide another incentive for residents and tourists to move away from single-use plastic bottles and opt for refillable water bottles. Offering so much in key locations in the city The Dubai Canning Fountain is also a testament to the unique public-private partnership model that has contributed greatly to Dubai’s continued success and touches the heart of our sustainability strategy, which revolves around creativity and collaboration.”
Al Qudra is a popular cycling path among Dubai residents, and the water station will provide cyclists with a convenient water bottle refill stop, which in turn will help promote healthy living.
Late last year, GMG partnered with DET to sponsor Al Qudra’s water station, building on its existing relationship with the sector. The agreement underscores GMG’s commitment to the UAE’s vision for a healthier society, enabling the two organisations to collaborate on events and activities that enhance the Dubai Fitness Challenge programme.
According to the UAE Natural World Wildlife Fund, the UAE consumes 94 kilograms of plastic every year, a large portion of which is in single-use bottles. Plastic waste has devastating effects on marine animals and birds. Efforts to reduce plastic waste support the UAE’s commitment to achieve the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (UNSDGs) and achieve the UAE’s Net Zero 2050 initiative. – arab trade news agency
