US envoy to Yemen Lenderking visits UAE, Oman and Saudi Arabia

[ad_1]

U.S. special envoy for Yemen, Tim Lundkin, will travel to the United Arab Emirates, Oman and Saudi Arabia starting August 11, while members of his team will travel to Jordan as part of our aggressive diplomatic efforts to help ensure UN mediation to extend the truce and intensify peace efforts. The Special Envoy and his team will focus on helping meaningfully expand the benefits of the ceasefire for all Yemenis and paving the way for a permanent ceasefire and a Yemeni-led inclusive, lasting conflict resolution. The Lenderking Envoy will also discuss the recent instability in Shabwa and the need to restore calm.

During his visit, the envoy will also highlight the need for additional financial assistance for Yemenis. This year alone, the United States has provided more than $1 billion in humanitarian assistance, bringing our total contribution to Yemen’s humanitarian response to nearly $5 billion since the crisis began eight years ago. For the people of Yemen, we urge donors to give generously and to honor previous pledges immediately.

In the Gulf, the envoy will also continue to support the United Nations in raising awareness and funding safer Tanker Emergency Program. With a funding gap of about $14 million and the UN Houthi deal to offload oil to a makeshift vessel, we are the closest we’ve ever come to addressing the threat posed by this abandoned tanker. An oil spill would exacerbate the world’s worst humanitarian crisis, cause severe environmental damage, and affect shipping and other economic activities around the world.
