A new fish market has opened in Abu Dhabi’s historic Mina Zayed port area, which is undergoing a major redevelopment.
Located next to the original fish market, the new fish market features 8 restaurants and 44 fish cleaning stations and commercial space.
Besides the supermarket, there are 104 fresh fish stalls, 8 dried fish stalls, 4 fruit and vegetable stalls and 3 commercial kiosks.
The redevelopment of Mina Zayed is being carried out by the Abu Dhabi Department of Municipal and Transport (DMT) and Modon Properties.
Dr. Salem Al Kaabi, Director of Operations, DMT, Said that the new fish market will “because of its design an important attraction for residents and tourists in the emirate”.
“The new site reflects Abu Dhabi’s tradition of fish trade and fishing, which is well known in the region,” said Dr Al Kaabi.
“The DMT believes that the preservation of cultural elements is an integral part of the emirate’s urban development strategy to achieve sustainable development.”
Ahmed Al Zaabi, Delivery Director of Modon Properties, Said that the construction of the Mina Zayed Redevelopment Project is “in full swing and the project is expected to be completed within the stipulated time”.
Opened in 1972, Mina Zayed has been Abu Dhabi’s main port for over 40 years.
Major revival works to begin in November 2020 tear down Mina Plaza is an abandoned development with 144 floors.
In addition to the fish market, plans include a complete overhaul of some existing souks, as well as the creation of a new fruit and vegetable market, plant souks and seasonal markets.
The business will remain operational throughout the redevelopment and will be moved to a new location in the development upon completion.
The redevelopment of the area, which spans over 3 million square meters, aims to transform the area into an integrated tourism, commercial and residential destination.
