Indian envoy to UAE says non-residents are key pillar of Independence Day celebrations

Residents wave saffron, white and green flags in a festive, colorful atmosphere to mark India 75th Independence Day Celebrations take place in the UAE on Monday.

Hundreds of Indians gathered at the Abu Dhabi embassy and the Dubai consulate for the festivities, which included energetic dance performances.

“We achieved independence 75 years ago in 1947, when our tiranga, Our tricolour flag replaced the Union Jack,” he said.

“While every Independence Day celebration is important, today’s celebration is especially special because it marks our 75th anniversary of independence.

“75 years ago today, we emerged as a free nation from the yoke of colonialism and centuries of exploitation by colonists.”

Mr. Sudhir spoke about the country’s democratic foundations and diversity, where people of different faiths, languages ​​and ethnicities coexist.

The ambassador also spoke about the close ties between the leaders of the UAE and India, and the contribution of Indians in the UAE to building this strong relationship.

“India’s relationship with the UAE is stronger than ever, as if destined to come as India celebrates its 75th anniversary of independence and the UAE celebrates its 50th anniversary, the golden jubilee of the establishment of the UAE,” he said.

He described the UAE’s community as “one of the most important pillars of socio-economic strength and UAE-India relations”.

“Even in the most difficult times, such as during the Covid-19 pandemic, their contribution has been exemplary and will inspire Indians around the world,” Mr Sudhir said.

“Their contributions to the UAE’s economy and development are widely recognised not only by the UAE leaders and government, but also by the entire Emiratis.

“Their sincerity in giving back to the motherland is an important cog in India’s nation-building.”

Indians gathered in the auditoriums of the embassies and consulates in Abu Dhabi and Dubai to sing famous patriotic songs such as the national anthem.

As part of the community celebrations, art exhibitions and quiz competitions have been held over the past few days.

Vivid illustrations and paintings on display showcase famous locations in India. Folk art conveys themes of patriotism, coexistence and women’s empowerment.

“As an NRI [non-resident Indian], we don’t have much time to celebrate our heritage and culture, so we wait a day or two a year. These celebrations make us incredibly proud and delighted,” said Abu Dhabi-based artist Devi Sree.

“The live art, exhibitions and panel discussions all show our different perspectives. Artists are spreading the message of loyalty to the country, harmony and coexistence with nature.

“When we create something for our country, it brings us more joy.”
