Abu Dhabi’s Mansoor Al Mansoori took the lead at the 2022 UIM F2 World Championship on Sunday with a landslide victory at the Lithuanian Grand Prix.
After taking his first F2 pole position at KupiÅ¡kis 24 hours ago, Al Mansoori put in a superb performance, taking his maiden Grand Prix victory from Sharjah’s Sami Seliö by 2.416 seconds.
The Emirati driver’s confidence has grown since joining the Abu Dhabi team last season, an impressive performance.
The result more than made up for Al Mansoori’s disappointment in Lithuania last year, when he was knocked from behind while chasing the podium and forced out of the race.
“I’m very happy and I want to thank my team for all the hard work that went into making this happen,” he said. Before jumping into the water from the pontoon to celebrate his success.
Teammate and defending world champion Rashid Alkemzi finished sixth after problems in qualifying saw him start the second round of the 2022 season in seventh place.
It could have been a lot better for Al Qemzi, but because of an accident that brought the race to a halt on the first lap after his excellent start.
Almansouri admitted to being nervous before the race, but he showed no sign of it as he made a perfect start to reach the first turn with a lead.
Al Qemzi also achieved a trapeze finish and quickly moved up to fourth before losing the three places he gained when a collision between Swede Johan Österberg and Bimba Sjöholm brought the yellow flag.
With Österberg flipping and exiting immediately, Sjöholm exited after the restart and Al Mansoori continued to lead easily from Seliö.
He drove flawlessly on 45 laps to take a victory that put him eight points ahead of first-round winner Stefan Haggin of Germany, who finished fifth on the day.
