Promising to let audiences “feel every note,” the Aiken Symphony Orchestra will unveil its 2022-2023 concert season “Pictures in the Exhibition” at USC Aiken’s Etherredge Center on Saturday, September 10 at 7:30 p.m. main stage.

The Band’s eighth season opening concert is the first in a new series of performances by MasterWorks. The orchestra will showcase their talents, as well as some of the major works of composers of the 19th and early 20th centuries.

Begins with La Gazza Ladra Overture (“The Thief Magpie”) by the famous Italian opera composer Gioachino Rossini, a work intriguing for its innovative use of the snare drum in the early 19th century Attention. Listeners will then travel across the Atlantic to the United States to hear highly original compositions by renowned composer George Gershwin. Gershwin’s Piano Concerto in F major is a standout figure for stage and screen in American classical and popular music, representing the composer’s signature style of incorporating jazz into classical music. It’s a work that truly embodies the spirit of “Jazz Age” America.

The presentation of the evening will end with the highlight of the evening, the musical tour “Pictures in the Exhibition” at Modest Mussorgsky’s Master Art Gallery. Mussorgsky was a 19th-century Russian composer and member of the “Mighty Minority” group whose works represented the people, history, and culture of their native Russia. Inspired by 10 paintings by renowned Russian artist, architect and designer Viktor Hartmann, ‘Pictures in the Exhibition’ is a procedural work where an orchestra will guide the audience through the gallery The promenade, from painting to painting, captures the sound of each visual object in brilliant and varied hues. Pianist Albert Cano Smit, who leads the orchestra, will be the guest artist for the evening. Billed as a “moving young poet,” the recipient of the 2020 Rubinstein Piano Prize will bring this masterful and continually inspiring work to life.

Join Master Scott Weiss for the concert lecture “Illumination” ahead of this spectacular season opener.
