Tesla CEO Elon Musk said on Wednesday he would buy British football club Manchester United.
Musk, known for his disrespectful tweets, posted on the Weibo platform: “I want to buy Manchester United, you are welcome”.
While it’s unclear if the billionaire investor is serious about pursuing a deal, his tweet caused a storm on the internet.
The American Glazers, who control the club, have been facing the wrath of Manchester United fans as the team struggles on the pitch – the Old Trafford-based club are currently at bottom of the Premier League with a 4-0 win over Bren Tford in the away game.
Manchester United fans have protested in recent years against the Glazer family, who bought the club for £790 million ($955.51 million) in 2005.
As of Tuesday, United’s market value was $2.08 billion.

Musk’s tweet garnered tens of thousands of likes within minutes and sparked an overwhelming response from social media users.
“If they keep playing like they used to, you’ll get a discount,” one user wrote.
Another replied: “Manchester United players are finally dangerous in space.”
Many pointed to his recent failed deal with Twitter. Earlier this year, Musk offered to buy the social media company but backed out of the deal, claiming the social media platform had more “spam bots” and fake accounts than Twitter disclosed.
Twitter has sued Musk, saying the billionaire is using concerns about spam and bot accounts as an excuse to pull out of the deal.
