Etihad Rail launches new high-tech trains that can thrive in UAE climate

“The arrival of the new fleet of locomotives and wagons in the UAE on schedule reflects the level of achievement that the Etihad Rail project has achieved in the development of the UAE’s national rail network,” said Mohammed Al Marzouqi, executive director of rail relations at Etihad Rail.

“We ensured that the company’s new fleet is one of the most modern in the region and in the world, offering the highest safety standards in design, ensuring the best specifications for sustainability and environmental protection, and incorporating the latest in train operating technology and monitoring .”

New trains built for all conditions

Etihad Rail’s new fleet is designed to withstand the Gulf’s climate and landscape.

The new diesel and electric powered locomotives provide 4,600 hp of braking power. They are also equipped with the latest filtration innovations, such as a pulsed sand filtration system, which ensures that the trains operate efficiently when passing through desert areas.

The locomotives also use technologies that support emission reduction and employ onboard technologies and systems, such as European Train Control System (ETCS) Level 2, a highly advanced signaling system, to improve safety, reliability and efficiency.

Each locomotive can pull 100 wagons, which is equivalent to the capacity of 300 wagons. These trains carry the equivalent of 5,600 freight wagons per day.

“Our diesel-electric SD70 locomotives meet the highest global standards,” said Marty Haycraft, president and CEO of train supplier Progress Rail.

“Etihad Rail’s new fleet is a great testament to what our customers have come to expect from our advanced locomotives, which are designed to operate in extreme conditions.”

Rail project on track

This passenger train It will travel at a speed of 200 kilometers per hour and can carry about 400 people. They will connect 11 cities and regions in the UAE, from Al Sila in the west to Fujairah in the north.

A start date for the passenger service has not been announced, but officials say more than 36 million people will use the service annually by 2030.

The estimated travel time between customers is 50 minutes Abu Dhabi and Dubai It takes about 100 minutes to get from Abu Dhabi to Fujairah, reducing the commute time considerably.

The train will also contribute to the UAE’s sustainability efforts. Carbon emissions will be reduced by 70 to 80 percent compared to truck emissions, and a single train will replace about 300 trucks on the road.
