Etihad Rail receives first batch of new advanced trains

Etihad Rail, the developer and operator of the UAE’s national rail network, marked a new milestone in the network’s development with the arrival of the company’s first fleet of new and advanced rolling stock.

The bactch to the UAE via Zayed and Al Mussafa ports will run across the network upon completion.

The achievement was announced at an event organised by Etihad Rail in the city of Al Mirfa in Abu Dhabi’s Al Dhafrah region to unveil a new fleet of locomotives and wagons. The event was attended by Shadi Malak, CEO of Etihad Rail, Marty Haycraft, President and CEO of Progress Rail, and Henry Pang, Executive Director of CRRC Mena, as well as a number of senior officials from various parties.

The first shipments have arrived in the UAE via the ports of Zayed and Al Musafa, as part of Etihad Rail’s commitment to expand its train fleet to serve the entire network. The company will increase the fleet of heavy freight locomotives to 45 heavy transport locomotives, equivalent to six times the current fleet.

Progress Rail, the US-based Caterpillar Company and one of the world’s largest manufacturers of diesel locomotives and electric locomotives, will manufacture and supply the new EMD SD70 electric diesel locomotive.

The company has expanded the size of its vans, and the new fleet aims to accommodate more than 1,000 utility vans, three times the size of the existing fleet. CRRC, one of the world’s leading providers of sustainability solutions for the railway industry, will handle manufacturing and supplying the new fleet.

Mohammed Al Marzouqi, Executive Director, Rail Relations, Etihad Rail, said: “The arrival of the new fleet of locomotives and wagons in the UAE on schedule reflects the level of achievement that the Etihad Rail project has achieved in the development of the UAE’s national rail network. When fully operational, it will contribute to revitalizing and promoting economic growth in the UAE, especially over the next 50 years, by providing reliable and safe efficient freight services.

“The network will also contribute to the region’s economic growth through connectivity to the Gulf Cooperation Council (GCC) network, which will strengthen the UAE’s position as a regional and global hub for shipping and logistics services. Part of the preparations to operate the network to the highest global standards.”

“We ensured that the company’s new fleet is one of the most modern in the region and in the world, offering the highest safety standards in design, ensuring the best specifications for sustainability and environmental protection, and incorporating the latest in train operating technology and monitoring We also ensure that the fleet is suitable for the local geography and climate of the UAE and the region, and to meet the current and future needs of Etihad Rail customers, including industrial companies, shipping companies, building material suppliers, quarries and more,” Al Marzouqi added.

Etihad Rail fleet meeting the highest international standards
Etihad Rail’s new fleet is designed to withstand the geography, climatic conditions and high temperature and humidity levels of the GCC region, ensuring the highest levels of performance, efficiency and sustainability.

The fleet will enhance the UAE’s system of transport and logistics services, strengthening the country’s position in regional and international logistics. It will increase the capacity of the UAE’s national rail network to over 60 million tonnes of cargo per year. Etihad Rail’s new fleet will also help reduce CO2 emissions by 70-80%.

Each of the fleet’s new diesel- and electric-powered electric-diesel EMD SD70 locomotives deliver 4,600 horsepower, making it one of the most powerful engines in the Middle East. The locomotives are equipped with the latest filtration innovations, such as the pulse sand filter system, to ensure that the trains operate efficiently and efficiently as they traverse desert areas. They also employ and comply with the latest emission reduction technologies and standards.

The locomotives are equipped with advanced on-board technologies and systems such as European Train Control System (ETCS) Level 2, the most advanced signaling system of its kind, to ensure safety, security and reliability, as well as efficiency and sustainability.

Each locomotive can pull 100 wagons, which is equivalent to the capacity of 300 freight cars. These trains transport the equivalent of 5,600 truck trips per day.

The vans are equipped with the latest braking, signaling, control, communication and safety systems. The diversity of trucks will increase the flexibility and ability to transport goods of all sizes, including petrochemicals, raw steel and its products, limestone, cement, construction materials, industrial and household waste, aluminum, food and various commodities. This helps reduce shipping costs by 30% and improve logistics efficiency, driving the economic success of the network’s customers and users. In addition, rail transport will reduce road congestion caused by trucks, which are currently the only mode of transport.

The new locomotives and wagons will be stored at Etihad Rail’s facility in Al Mirfa until construction of the UAE’s national rail network is complete. Development of the network is progressing at a rapid pace with several achievements, the most recent being 75% of the second phase of the project in 28 months. – arab trade news agency
