Ismail Haniya re-elected as leader of the Palestinian group Hamas | Election News

[ad_1]

Since 2017, the chief of the Hanaya Party in Hamayahas has been re-elected for a four-year period after the internal elections of party members who did not prepare for the election this year.

Ismail Hania has been re-elected as the leader of the Palestinian group Hamas, and officials say it has consolidated his control of the organization that mandated the siege of the Gaza Strip.

Hania, who has been the leader of Hamas since 2017, has been controlling the organization’s political activities in Gaza, the Israeli-occupied West Bank and most of the diaspora from outside Gaza. He has allocated time between Turkey and Qatar in the past two years. . He did not say whether he would return.

He directs Hamas 11-day conflict with Israel In May, more than 250 people were killed in Gaza and 13 people were killed in Israel. Since then, the ceasefire mediated by Egypt has been held for most of the time.

“The Ismail Haniya brothers were re-elected as the head of the Politburo of the movement for the second time,” Palestinian officials told the Reuters news agency on Sunday after the internal election of party members. He won no objection. His term of office will last for four years.

The 58-year-old Hania was the right-hand man in Gaza for Hamas founder Sheikh Ahmed Yassin. Later, the leader of the armed group in a wheelchair was assassinated in an Israeli air strike in 2004.

Hania led Hamas into politics in 2006 when they unexpectedly won the Palestinian parliamentary elections, defeating the divided Fatah party led by President Mahmoud Abbas.

He became prime minister shortly after winning in January 2006, but Hamas, which is regarded as a “terrorist organization” by the United States, Israel, and the European Union, was evaded by the international community.

After a brief civil war, Hamas seized Gaza from the Fatah-led Palestinian Authority in 2007, which restricted autonomy in the West Bank. Since then, Israel led the blockade of Gaza on the grounds of the threat of Hamas.

Haniya’s victory ended the internal elections, and the Gaza chief Yahya Sinwar of the organization won a second term in March.

Due to the surge in May’s violence, further votes were postponed.

Hamas is an Islamic movement. Since it took control of Gaza in 2007 (most recently in May), it has faced four major Israeli military attacks and many small battles over the years.

Repeated fighting, coupled with the blockade of Egypt and Israel, has destroyed the economy of Gaza, and the unemployment rate is hovering around 50%.
