U.S. won't stop Ukraine from attacking Crimea targets

TRIBUNEWS.COM, Washington — The U.S. government in Washington gave Ukraine the green light to target the Crimean peninsula.

The US sees Ukraine’s invasion of Crimea as a fair game of self-defense. Major U.S. media reported on Washington’s new stance, politicianbe cited Russia today, Friday (August 19, 2022).

The information was made by quoting an unnamed official in the administration of U.S. President Joe Biden.

according to politics, Washington will not stop its attacks on the peninsula if Kyiv deems it necessary.

Historically, Crimea was part of independent Ukraine from 1991 to 2014, when the local people voted to reunite with Moscow.

“We certainly don’t choose targets, everything we offer is for self-defense. Whatever target they choose on sovereign Ukrainian territory, by definition, it’s self-defense,” said the official, speaking on condition of anonymity.

Asked if the Biden administration considers the peninsula to be Ukraine’s sovereign territory, the official said, “Crimea is Ukraine.”

Crimea seceded from Ukraine following an armed coup in Kyiv in 2014 and voted the most to join Russia in a referendum, something the West does not recognize.

A Ukrainian official told the media that messages of support from the Biden administration had reached Kyiv.

Politico’s report echoes earlier comments by Ukraine’s Defense Minister Alexei Reznikov.
