Roanoke, VA (WDBJ) – singer-songwriter Charles Esten Instead of entertaining audiences on stage, he played the villainous father Ward Cameron on the Netflix hit “The Bund.”
“We’re almost done with season three and it’s been a wild, wild ride. It’s been so much fun. The show is so lucky,” Esten said.
It’s a blessing and a huge change from his previous starring role as country singer Deacon Claiborne on TV’s “Nashville.”
Esten did get a good laugh when WDBJ7 asked if the evil Ward Cameron would play country tunes on “The Outer Banks.”
“I have a pretty vivid imagination. I can think of a lot of things and how they would work. I can’t for the life of me imagine how Ward would sit down and play the guitar and play a soft and sentimental piece that expresses his Contempt for the Pogue family. That’s going to be a tough question,” he said.
Ward can’t sing, but Esten can.
He’s excited to be back on tour Coffs Amphitheater Saturday, September 10 at Union Hall.
“I’m lucky to go and play my music whenever we have time. Soon after we get back. I’ll be heading to Smith Hill Lake and I’m very happy,” Esten said.
Virginia holds a special place in his heart because he moved to Alexandria as a child and spent time with his grandfather in Buchanan.
His love for his grandfather is evident in his music, especially in songs like “How Are You.”
“So, that’s why I love to play in the mountains in Virginia. He was born near Roanoke in Buchanan. He wasn’t born there. He grew up in Buchanan and the mountains have A family home. So, it all means a lot to me and has inspired me a lot over the years,” Esten said.
Speaking of family, his wife, Patty, works with him.
“She’s definitely going to be a fan favorite. It also makes me happy that people see her on the side of the stage or walking around, getting to know her from our livestreams and on social media. I’m her biggest fan,” Eh said. Sten said.
The couple also shared a labor of love, supporting Leukemia and Lymphoma Society.
“We have a daughter who was diagnosed with leukemia when she was two and a half years old, so together we’re committed to the Leukemia and Lymphoma Society and their Light the Night campaign, and I think we’re on our way to 10 years,” Esten said .
Whether it’s his philanthropy, his TV shows or his music, Esten is a busy man.
One of his newer songs is “Worst Day”, a duet with the singer Julia Cole.
When it comes to his live performances, Esten likes to keep it on the cuff and in the moment.
“If I have a vibe at a certain moment because I don’t know what the audience will bring at any given moment and what they will bring – it’s a partnership. It’s a back and forth between us. Team. That’s the beauty of this particular venue. Trust me, it’s going to be professional. It’s not just sitting around a campfire. But it’s a bit like sitting around a campfire,” he said.
Likewise, Esten’s performance will take place at the Coves Amphitheater in Union Hall near Smith Hill Lake on September 10 at 7 p.m.
