The conference was divided into storytelling, a Mushaira poetry competition, musical performances and an open literary dialogue discussing the past, present and future of Urdu. The festival will end with an award ceremony to encourage and promote the local Urdu culture.
Renowned Sufi singers Moeed Hashmi and Tabsira Suhrawardi (Tabu) will perform at the event. Gaggan Mudgal, an acclaimed Dubai-based artist, will give a hilarious behind-the-scenes look at the life of a radio presenter. Poets Abbas Tabish, Hamida Shaheen, Amir Imam and Dr. Asim Wasti and academics Abbas Tabish and Yaqoob Tassavvur also confirmed their involvement. The festival will be hosted by Dr. Sabahat Asim Wasti, a renowned rehabilitation expert in the UAE, and Syed Sarosh Asif, a senior wealth manager in Abu Dhabi.
“As a platform, Culture Carwaan will provide young, up-and-coming talented artists with the opportunity to showcase their talents, while also working with some internationally renowned artists. We hope to set a new benchmark for service in Urdu, and Make sure to provide the best possible experience for the local community,” said Dr. Vasti, poet and author of six books.
“While the Urdu-speaking community in the UAE has been organising individual programmes, Kawan Culture will bring to the audience multiple types of Urdu literature such as drama, panel discussions, storytelling, poetry and music, all of which are One day under one roof! In addition, we are delighted to announce plans to host an annual festival in the Emirate of Abu Dhabi and keep the spirit of the language here,” added Asif, an international poet who has lived in the UAE for 18 years.
Ehtesham Shahid, who is performing at the festival’s storytelling segment, said the idea was to make art and culture a relaxing and cathartic experience for professionals who have trouble finding time.
Gaggan Mudgal will present ‘Radio Dekho’, a comedy sketch that performed successfully in Dubai, but will be staged in Abu Dhabi for the first time.
“Basically, the show is about the life of a radio presenter – we’re on the radio for up to four hours a day, and no matter what’s going on in our lives, we try to keep a happy face on the radio. Then It’s the creative differences between sales and show directors, and weird calls on the radio. On top of that, we have listeners who are obsessed with winning. For my Culture Carwaan special section, I’ll also talk about Urdu, how it works in played an important role in my life, especially when using Urdu poetry as a language of communication,” said Mudgal.
