UAE: Doctors advise young people on caring for the elderly on Seniors’ Day – News

People need more love, care, support and attention later in life than before

Old age, often referred to as the second childhood, is a delicate stage in life. This is a time when older adults need love, care, support and attention more than ever. For children, this is a time of role reversal and they have to become parents.

In honor of Seniors’ Day on August 21, doctors offer some tips for seniors’ health care and well-being.

Dr. Anwar Al Zaabi, consultant cardiologist at Tawam Hospital in Al Ain, noted that older people, especially those who are sick, tend to avoid travel or outdoor activities, preferring to stay at home. But children must ensure that the medicines are provided as prescribed.

“Prepare a medicine chest each week before you travel. Fill the medicine chest with a week’s worth of prescriptions. Do this in the presence of the home caregiver to ensure he/she is familiar with your parents’ exact medication schedule.”

Dr. Al Zaabi recommends setting alerts on caregivers’ phones to remind them to take their medicines on time.

“It is our responsibility to the parent, not the carer, to set the alarm to make sure he/she remembers when to take the medicine.”

Dr. Al Zaabi stressed that direct contact numbers for doctors and hospitals must be known to everyone in the immediate family, including nursing staff.

“In the event of an emergency and you’re not around, your caregiver or anyone looking after them can call the doctor, the hospital, even if you’re abroad,” Dr Al Zaabi said on the importance of being prepared for any medical emergency Speaking of sex.

Dr Syed Rabbani, a specialist in internal medicine at the NMC Royal Hospital in Sharjah, said that people around the world are living longer as communicable and non-communicable diseases are managed better than before. However, the physiological effects of aging itself are compounded by comorbidities, polypharmacy (use of multiple drugs), and unhealthy lifestyles.

“Frailty is an emerging syndrome of older adults. It is defined as a state of extreme fragility with progressive decline in the physiological function of multiple organ systems. This results in a significant loss of function, loss of physiological reserves, and a Vulnerability to death increases.”

Dr Rabbani offers five sets of recommendations when it comes to different ways to ensure seniors’ well-being and good health.

Connect with people: Help older adults find ways to connect with others to avoid social isolation and loneliness.

Positive points: Encourage enjoyable physical activity. Incorporate exercise into their daily routine as much as possible.

take notes: Promotes seniors’ interest in current affairs and local news. Meditation and/or relaxation techniques to manage anxiety and avoid fears and worries about the past and future.

Keep learning: Encourage older adults to try new things.

The art of giving: Doing things for others is rewarding and makes them valuable contributors to the community.

Dr Rabbani added that young people must treat their elders with dignity and respect.

“Children and teens must be humble and talk to older adults in a dignified manner. Be around them as much as possible. Be involved in their daily lives and meet their needs. Schedule some precious time with them to make them memorable like and They eat together, visit them a lot, travel with them. Try to remove obstacles in their areas and make sure there is plenty of light so they don’t fall.”
