Abu Dhabi: visit this action-packed city with express trains, food and natural wonders

With a world-class Grand Prix circuit, exciting theme parks and action-packed event schedule, Abu Dhabi is the forward-thinking cultural hub of the UAE.

In the next year alone, NBA giants, Premier League footballers and celebrities from the arts will come to the emirate for a series of high-profile events.

But for tourists visiting the UAE, glitz and glamour are only part of the equation. With large museums, palatial Islamic architecture and abundant nature, there are endless ways to experience the wonders of Abu Dhabi.

At the Arab Tourism Market 2022 in neighbouring Dubai, Abu Dhabi’s Department of Culture and Tourism (DCT) announced a series of new initiatives as they hope to increase visitor numbers to 23 million a year by 2030.

“We want to preserve the premium experience — enjoy the beachculture and beautiful nature – and build on it to grow our tourism in a sustainable way,” said Husain AlHashmi, DTC’s acting director of tourism trade and market development.

“This is an important announcement week, with more to come in the coming months.”

Saadiyat Vision and Cultural Treasures of the Island

with it white sand beach, sparkling waters and vibrant cuisine, it’s easy to fall in love with Saadiyat Island. But there’s also a lot of substance beneath the shiny surface.

The newly announced Saadiyat Vision aims to attract 19 million tourists and generate $1.4 billion (€1.3 billion) in revenue by 2025, most notably the ongoing Saadiyat Cultural District project.

“We believe that Saadiyat is one of the best beach experiences in the region,” said AlHashmi. “The hotels there also offer quality products and the cultural district is unique.”

When completed, the Saadiyat Cultural District will be one of the most dense and globally relevant cultural hubs in the world, joined by the Guggenheim Abu Dhabi, the Zayed National Museum, the Natural History Museum and the Abraham Family Home The Louvre opened in 2017.

Culture lovers, meanwhile, should head straight for the dazzling white color of Abu Dhabi’s Sheikh Zayed Grand Mosque, or delve into the area’s history at Qasr Al Hosn, the city’s oldest permanent building.

Summers in Abu Dhabi are usually quieter, but that seems to be changing with the launch of the “Summer As You Think” campaign, inspiring tourists to visit the capital this season.

The campaign includes promoting indoor activities such as swimming with sharks at the National Aquarium, yoga at Louvre Abu Dhabi and hotel promotions that reduce prices by up to 30%.

There’s also the Abu Dhabi Summer Pass, which gives you exclusive benefits at some of the city’s biggest attractions, including entry to Warner Bros. World Abu Dhabi and Yas Waterworld Abu Dhabi.

What should I eat in Abu Dhabi?

Abu Dhabi’s restaurant setting is diverse, from local cuisine to fine dining, to tantalize your taste buds.

In 2022, Abu Dhabi hosts MENA’s 50 Best Restaurants, with Hakkasan, Coya and Butcher & Still restaurants appearing on the esteemed list. This year also expanded the UAE Food Programme, a government initiative to bring authentic Emirati dishes to the city’s best menus.

“Food has been one of our main focuses for the past two years, and we are excited to continue expanding our culinary scene,” said AlHashmi.

“We are proud to offer world-class restaurants and brands as well as local dishes passed down from generation to generation.”

What’s the best way to see nature?

Just a short walk from the hustle and bustle of the city is one of AlHashmi’s top recommendations for nature lovers.

The sprawling mangrove national park is a haven for bird watchers and wildlife photographers looking to spend an hour or two in the wild.

Keep an eye out for flamingos, herons, turtles, dolphins and turtles as you kayak to explore the waterways of the biodiversity hotspot.
