Kathmandu [Nepal]August 21 (ANI): Nepalese Congress leader and lawmaker Pradip Giri died Saturday night at the age of 74.
Sher Bahadur Deuba, Prime Minister of Nepal and President of Nepal’s Parliament, expressed his condolences on Giri’s passing, calling him a “truly good leader”.

“I was very shocked by the news of the passing of my friend Pradeep Giriji, the Nepalese Congress leader, the philosopher and socialist thinker of Nepalese politics. With his passing, Nepal has lost a A truly excellent leader. Wishing his soul eternal peace and my deepest condolences to the family at this sad time,” Deuba tweeted.
According to the hospital where Giri was being treated, the senior Congress leader took his last breath around 9:30pm (NST). “Sadly, he’s gone, salute to Pradeep Giri,” tweeted another NC leader, Minendra Rijal.
Giri is battling health problems and after being diagnosed with cancer, he was treated in India for several months. Soon after he returned home from treatment, his health deteriorated.
Most recently, he suffered from pneumonia, which caused multiple organ failure. A week ago, Giri’s health deteriorated and he was receiving supportive ventilator treatment. A few days ago, he stopped recognizing people and stopped talking to them.
Giri was born in Siraha, eastern Nepal, and holds a master’s degree in philosophy and economics from Jawaharlal University, India. Giri’s father, Netra Lal Giri, was the NC leader. Inspired by his father, he joined North Carolina in 1961.
Giri spent four years in prison during the Panchayati regime. He is a popular leader among the leading cadres. Giri has also authored more than two dozen books. A Gandhian statesman, he is one of the few leaders in Nepal who can explain Marxism.
He served twice as a member of the Constituent Assembly, which drafted Nepal’s constitution in 2015. However, he refused to sign the document, saying the process was flawed and the constitution failed to address the concerns of all segments of society – Tharus, Madheshis and Janajatis.
He expressed sympathy for those protesting the drafting process of the constitution, even as the top leader of his party was eager to finalize the document. (ANI)
