Japan The Yomiuri Shimbun reported on Sunday that the deployment of 1,000 long-range cruise missiles is being considered to enhance its ability to counter China.
The newspaper, citing government sources, said the missiles would be existing weapons modified to extend their range from 100 kilometers (62 miles) to 1,000 kilometers.
The Yomiuri Shimbun said the weapons, which were launched by ships or planes, were mainly deployed in the southern part of Nansei Island and could reach the coastal areas of North Korea and China.
A representative for Japan’s foreign ministry did not immediately respond to a request for comment on the report.

Japan, which has interpreted its postwar constitution, which abandoned war as likely to use its military only for self-defense, has ramped up military spending and adopted a more assertive strategy in recent years. But it has not deployed long-range missiles, one of its restrictions on weapons that can strike targets on foreign territory.
