A knife-wielding man stabbed Maldives Minister Ali Solih in Hulhumale, north of the Maldivian capital Male, on Monday.
The minister’s left arm was injured. The attackers were taken into custody shortly after the violence.
Solih is the Minister of State for Environment, Climate Change and Technology.
He also serves as the spokesman for the Jumhooree Party (JP), a coalition partner of the Maldives Democratic Party (MDP) under the country’s current government, President Ibrahim Solih.
On a road in Hulhumale, Solih was attacked while driving a motorcycle. According to Maldivian media, the attackers recited several verses of the Koran before attacking Solih in the neck from behind.
The knife cut through part of his left arm, but missed the neck.
In May 2021, an explosion outside the home of former President Mohammad Nasheed in Malé, the capital of the Maldives, made headlines. Maldives is an archipelago in the Indian Ocean.
Nasheed’s car was nearby when the explosive device was placed on the bike. Nasheed received critical care before being airlifted to Germany for months of treatment.
Maldives is threatened by recruitment by foreign militant groups and growing Islamic radicalism.
