August 24 (UPI) – Belgian Mike Rutherford, 17, landed in Bulgaria on Tuesday night, ending a 30,000-mile trek across 30 countries to become the world’s youngest person to fly alone.

Rutherford is described as a Bulgarian and an Englishman who flew from Bulgaria to Italy, Greece and North Africa. He continued on to the Middle East, China, Japan and Alaska via Kenya.
Once in North America, he flew to Mexico, then back to Canada and Greenland, before crossing the Atlantic to Scotland and back to Bulgaria.
“I wanted to use this opportunity to meet young people who are doing incredible things on my line, making a difference in their communities and even the world,” Rutherford said on his website. “Usually few people Know them. Together we can show that young people make a difference.”

“I’ve been trying to keep in touch with him and help him when he’s flying,” Zara Rutherford told the Guardian. “Our parents called him every day and I joined those conversations. I gave him advice on routes and flights so I could be useful to him.”
