Elkhart – The Elkhart chapter of the Indiana Black Expo will continue to celebrate its 50th anniversary, honor one of its founders, and announce the launch of the Leroy Robinson Weekend.
Robinson passed away on June 25, 2022, at the age of 85. He was instrumental and spearheaded the decision to create the Elkhart chapter for the state organization, which strives to be a voice and tool for the social and economic advancement of youth and families in Indiana, known at the Indiana Black Fair. Drive long-term and positive change in communities through development programs based on a core focus of economic empowerment. This year, the Elkhart chapter celebrates 50 years of service in Elkhart County and across the state. Elkhart chapter president Robert Taylor said “Leroy’s impact on this community will never be measured.”
Leroy worked as a construction commissioner in Elkhart for 16 years until his retirement. He is a member of the St. James AME Church and along with his wife, Beatrice, founded HOME, an organization whose mission is to break down barriers that exist in homeownership and assist with the entire process from prep classes to the application process to eventual closure a home. He is also a member of the NAACP and is a proud veteran who served in the U.S. Army.
The Elkhart chapter of the Indiana Black Expo will host the Leroy Robinson Southern Soul and Soul Festival, South Side Parade and Leroy Robinson Southern Soul and Soul Music at Green Free Concerts August 26-27.
The festival kicks off on August 26th at 6pm in the Lerner Crystal Ball Room. The Leroy Robinson Southern Soul & Soul Festival will feature a star-studded lineup that includes Southern soul legend Wendell B, multi-platinum and 8-time Grammy-nominated singer Glen Jones, 5-time platinum artist and self-proclaimed line dance king Cupid , Chicago Legend Platinum Recording Artist Announcement
The event will be hosted by Wilmington North Carolina Coast 97.3 DJ and radio personality Brandon “Big B” Hickman, with music by legendary Detroit DJ Steady Rock.
Weekend festivities will continue at 9 a.m. on August 27 with the Elkhart chapter of the Indiana Black Fair Southside Parade starting at the corner of South Sixth Street and Lusher Avenue. The parade will feature grand, celebrities, floats, cars, trucks, motorcycles and more, highlighting the Southside community.
Beginning at 10:30am in the green space of Central Park, the Leroy Robinson Southern Soul and Soul Festival will continue with a free concert featuring platinum recording artist, songwriter and actor Big Bub. Additionally, platinum recording artist Magic One will perform his hit singles Baddest One, Danny Lerman, George Bostic and Culture, and Elkhart’s own Chynaih Woods. There will be a line dance class featuring South Bend’s own Dr. Lorenzo. The day will feature vendors and kiosks, food trucks and other family-friendly activities.
Proceeds from Friday night’s paid concert will go towards our goal of raising $25,000 for the Black Fair’s scholarship fund. Saturday’s events call 574-226-4328 for vendor booths, food truck opportunities and concert tickets.
