John Eastman, 83, entertainment attorney

John Lindner Eastman was born in Manhattan on July 10, 1939, to Lee Weir Eastman and his predecessor Louise Lindner. He grew up in Scarsdale, New York and graduated from Scarsdale High School. He received his BA from Stanford University in California in 1961 and his LL.B. from New York University School of Law in 1964.

On September 7 of that year, he married Josephine Merrill. Mrs Eastman survived. “From 1964 until his death, their marriage was a beautiful love story for nearly 58 years,” their son said. “He always referred to mom as his North Star, which I thought was beautiful.”

Mr. Eastman joined his father in 1965 as a partner at Eastman & Eastman. The elder Mr. Eastman died in 1991.

John Eastman first came to East Hampton in the late 1950s when he found a job as a sailing instructor, his son said. Lee Eastman came to East Hampton in 1961 and bought a house on Lily Pond Lane. In 1973, John and Josephine Eastman rented in Sagaponack and Wainscott before buying their own house on Lily Pond Lane, formerly the site of Anita Zahn’s summer art school, where young Jacqueline and Caroline Lee Bouvier studied dance .

Mr Eastman is a member of the Maidstone Club and the George Card Society. He is a trustee of the Willem de Kooning Foundation and patron of Amber Waves Farm, Springs Food Pantry and Duck Creek Arts Center. “He was an avid tennis player and he loved sailing on the Georgeka pond,” his son said.

The young Mr. Eastman, who became his father’s law partner in 1997, said of East Hampton, where the family “spends every weekend, summer and free time”. “We’ve worked closely together over the years.” Mr McCartney was “here because of my father,” he said. “He and Linda used to live in our house with their kids. It was like a ’70s mulatto with everyone running around.”

The Eastmans also live on East Side Avenue in Manhattan, where Mr. Eastman served on the board of the American Museum of Natural History. “He is a longtime trustee of Smith College in Northampton, Massachusetts,” his son said. “He was very concerned about education, the education of women.”

As Mr. Eastman’s focus turned to charity work, “he was spending more and more time here,” his son said. “Like many people, my parents were happy to stay here when Covid hit.” In recent years, Mr. Eastman has been a frequent presence at Georgeka Beach, where he will lead the family’s Tibetan terrier “lucky” “. “He went every day, rain or shine,” his son said, meeting “a beautiful group of people who became ‘dog friends.'”

Mr McCartney wrote: “There is much to be said about his incredible qualities, but words cannot describe his passion for life and our affection for this amazing man. He will be sorely missed, But in the hearts of those of us who knew and loved him.”

Mr. Eastman was buried in a grassy poppy field in Peru, Vermont. In addition to his wife and son, he has a daughter, Louise Eastman of Brooklyn and North Haven, and another son, Jay Eastman of Manhattan and North Haven. . Eleven grandchildren also survived. They are Nancy, Hugh, Otto, Merrill, Jack, Oliver and Otis Eastman in Manhattan, Heidi Loening in New Orleans, Lola Loening in Brooklyn, Graciela Watrous in Brooklyn and Julian Watrous in Manhattan. Two sisters, Laura Malcolm of Rancho Santa Fe, California, and Louise Weed, of Cambridge, Massachusetts, also survived. Mrs McCartney died in 1998.
