The country records more than 10,000 new infections across the country every day.

Organizers of the Tokyo Olympics reported 18 new Olympic-related Covid-19 cases on Tuesday, bringing the total since July 1 to 294.

Officials said Japan will change its policy to focus on hospitalization of patients who are seriously ill and at risk of severe illness from Covid-19, so as to avoid pressure on the medical system as the number of cases in Tokyo and other places, the host city of the Olympics, surges. .

The country’s coronavirus cases have increased dramatically, with more than 10,000 new infections every day across the country. Tokyo hit a record high of 4,058 on Saturday, exceeding 4,000 for the first time.

Japanese Prime Minister Yoshihide Suga said after a government working group meeting on Monday evening: “We will provide necessary beds for severely ill patients and those who may become severely ill.”

Yoshihide Suga said that other patients will be required to stay at home, and if their condition worsens, the government will ensure that they can be hospitalized. Previous policies focused on hospitalization of a wider range of high-risk patients.

Japan on Monday extended its state of emergency to three prefectures near Tokyo and Osaka prefecture in the west. The existing emergency in Tokyo — the fourth emergency since the pandemic began — and the southern island of Okinawa will now last until August 31.

The country avoided a devastating outbreak of the virus. As of Sunday, the total number of cases in the country was approximately 932,000, and the death toll was slightly more than 15,000.

But it is now working to control the highly disseminated Delta variant, even if the public is increasingly tired of their activities, mainly voluntary restrictions and lagging in the launch of vaccinations, especially among young residents.

Less than 30% of the population is fully vaccinated.

City data show that as of Sunday, nearly 70% of Covid-19 patients with severe illness have full beds.
